J, J-DRILLED HSS TAPERED TAP

The J, J-Drilled HSS Tapered Tap is a High-Speed Steel (HSS) J-Tapered Tap designed for tapping reamed holes in castings prior to the installation of “J” Solid (452-2613-13) and “J-2 Drilled” (452-2613-14) ductile iron plugs. This tap is a component of the ISX15 / QSX15 DOHC Casting Repair Tooling Kit (450-6110-60) and the ISX15 / QSX15 SOHC Casting Repair Tooling Kit (450-6117-60).

The J, J-Drilled HSS Tapered Tap is a High-Speed Steel (HSS) tapered tap specifically engineered for preparing threaded holes in castings for the installation of “J” series ductile iron plugs. This tool is designed for use with both the J Solid ductile iron plug (Part # 452-2613-13) and the J-2 Drilled ductile iron plug (Part # 452-2613-14), both of which are classified as Diesel Ductile Iron Plugs.

This J-Tapered Tap is an integral part of the ISX15 / QSX15 DOHC Casting Repair Tooling Kit (450-6110-60) and the ISX15 / QSX15 SOHC Casting Repair Tooling Kit (450-6117-60). In the casting repair process for these engines, after the injector hole has been reamed using the tapered reamer (407-5213-10) and the Split Sleeve Tap Driver (449-6933-30), this tap is used to create the necessary threads for the “J” Plug.

Proper lubrication is crucial when using this tapered tap to ensure smooth cutting and prolong tool life. Irontite Tap-O (468-9920-08) is the recommended tapping fluid for this application.

As a tapered tap, this tool cuts along its entire length. For effective use and to ensure a reasonable lifespan, especially when working with thicker metal castings, it is essential to first ream the hole with the corresponding tapered reamer (407-5213-10). This pre-reaming step reduces the amount of material the tap needs to remove.
