Product Details

The Removal & Installation Tool for Detroit Diesel 60 Series engines equipped with Stainless Steel Injector Sleeves streamlines the process of replacing injector sleeves. Designed for ease of use, this tool allows a machinist to remove and install these sleeves efficiently using standard shop hand tools, without the requirement of a machining center (seat & guide machine) when the cylinder head is on the bench.

Why Sleeve Replacement is Necessary:

Injector sleeves must be removed if the cylinder head needs to be resurfaced or if the sleeve is leaking under pressure testing. It is crucial to note that the cylinder head should not be resurfaced with the injector sleeve in place, as this will alter the critical specified Injector Tip Protrusion.

Maintaining Injector Tip Protrusion After Resurfacing:

When resurfacing a cylinder head (typically by .007, .012, or .018 inches), shims of corresponding thicknesses must be placed under the Injector Sleeve upon re-installation. These shims are essential to maintain the critical injector tip protrusion specified by the OEM. On a virgin, untouched cylinder head, no shim is used under the Injector Sleeve; shims are only necessary after the head has been resurfaced.

Using the Removal & Installation Tool:

  1. Install the Injector Sleeve Removal/Installation tool into the Injector Bore, carefully aligning the tool with the slots present in the stainless steel sleeve.
  2. To remove the old sleeve, turn the tool counter-clockwise.
  3. Thoroughly inspect the removed injector sleeve for any defects or cracks. Replace the sleeve if any damage is found.
  4. Exercise care to avoid scoring the cylinder head’s sealing surface for the injector tube while cleaning this area and the casting threads. Pay strict attention to prevent any debris from entering the fuel supply line. A chemical solvent may be used to clean the injector tube’s interior sealing surface.
  5. Clean the injector bore area completely. Install a new O-Ring into the injector tube groove, using a silicone-based lubricant to aid installation and sealing.
  6. Apply a high-temperature, nickel-based anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new injector sleeve. Important: Do not use a thread sealant, as this will make future removal of the sleeve extremely difficult.
  7. Place the new injector sleeve, with the O-Ring installed, into the injector bore. Using the remover/installer tool, align the tool with the slots in the sleeve.
  8. Tighten the injector sleeve to the torque specification of 26-33 ft lbs.
  9. Loosen the sleeve by turning it 180 degrees.
  10. Re-torque the injector sleeve to the specification of 26-33 ft lbs.

With the injector sleeve properly installed using this tool, the cylinder head can be confidently returned to service at OEM specifications – it is then truly “Irontite.” This tool represents one of the “Best Diesel Tools” available, offering an excellent opportunity for professionals to enhance their service capabilities and contribute to the longevity of the industry.

Note: This Removal & Installation Tool is specifically designed for Detroit Diesel 60 Series engines with Stainless Steel Injector Sleeves.
