Navistar 466E & 530E Injector Sleeve Roll-In Tool
In order to achieve the necessary dimensions required of our Roll in Tools, these are precision machined in house at our Cedar Rapids Manufacturing facility. These parts are ground to the highest standards in order to be most accurate for OEM (Original Equipment Specifications).
Our Roll-In-Tools are non-adjustable, so specifications repeat each during usage. The operator can ensure the same outcome in sizing of expansion with a positive stop every time as the cage and roller assemble (wetted with motor oil) is drawn upward on the arbor to its proper expansion limits when turned clockwise (at a low 50 RPM) in a newly seated injector sleeve.
International Harvester/Navistar has 3 “466” series of engines “over the years”, these are listed in order:
- 466 two-valve cylinder heads-mechanical injectors with a brass injector sleeve.
- 466E (& 530E) two-valve cylinder heads with Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector (HEUI) injectors. The early version had brass injector sleeves while later had stainless steel injector sleeves.
- 466E four-valve cylinder heads with Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector (HEUI) Injectors, with stainless steel injector sleeves. Note: We do not offer any tooling for this series.
Installed injector sleeves in a factory fresh cylinder head are not rolled or expanded into the casting, only a sleeve to cast fit (with sealant in the appropriate areas) is used.
Our roll-in tools were developed, 1st for the problems with replaced stainless steel injector sleeves on 466E & 530E two valve cylinder heads. Our machinist tradesmen came to us (Irontite) with having injector sleeves leaking at the top of the sleeve. We developed our roll-in tool to expand the top of the injector sleeve to eliminate that issue, however during the 10 month span for us to design/develop & manufacture our roll-n tool, the manufacture: IH/Navistar released a replacement updated stainless steel injector sleeve version to minimize that issue of the stainless steel injector sleeve leakage.
At the same time of this development we also manufactured a roll-in tool for the IH/Navistar for 7.3 Power stroke series as some machine shops felt a need to roll out the top of that brass Injector sleeve for a better fit.
Injector Sleeve Removal & Installation tooling is the same for both IH/Nav 7.3L & 466E&530E applications. However with our roll-in tools we had to design/develop & manufacture two independent tools due to sizing differences.
Both roll-in tools expand the injector sleeve at the top or upper bell of the injector sleeve. The 466/530E injector sleeve is a shorter 7.3L injector sleeve, like taking a 7.3L sleeve and chopping off the upper bell to make a 466E/530E injector sleeve, hence the different roll-in tools.
Our roll-in tools discussed here are manufactured to function with OEM factory injector sleeves and will work with aftermarket injector sleeves only “if” the wall thickness of the injector sleeve is to OEM specifications.
We have seen some aftermarket injector sleeves that are not to OEM specifications which do not have the same ID size as the OEM versions. They have a thin wall thickness which means our roll-in tool has nothing to expand. So be aware that our roll-in tool is made for OEM injector sleeve specifications.
Some may ask, why don’t we have these roll in tools in the kits? Irontite is the only manufacture of tooling that makes these. It is not OEM mandatory and we have never had a request to require it. Plus, including both roll-in tools in kits raises the kit price significantly making them cost prohibitive for items not required for OEM processes.
