Product Details

The Autogrind DC Gearmotor is a key electromechanical component responsible for the automated downward feed of the grinding head on Van Norman FG5000 and FG10000 flywheel grinders that are equipped with the AutoGrind™ feature. Located within the assembly for PowerHead with AutoGrind™ Controls, a single unit of this “Auto feed Gear Motor” is required for the system to function.

The operation of this motor is central to the Auto-Grind process:

  1. Power Source: The DC motor receives its electrical power from the DC Controller, which is housed within the grinder’s control panel. This power is supplied when the Auto-Grind function is activated by the operator.
  2. Speed Reduction and Torque Amplification: The motor is integrated with a gearbox. This gearbox serves to reduce the high rotational speed of the DC motor while simultaneously increasing its output torque. This lower speed and higher torque are essential for providing the precise and controlled downward movement of the heavy grinding head.
  3. Clutch Engagement: The output shaft of the gear motor is fitted with an electrically activated clutch pulley. When the Auto-Grind system is engaged and operating correctly, this clutch engages. This engagement transmits the rotational force generated by the motor, through the gearbox, to the mechanical linkage responsible for the vertical (downward) movement of the grinding head.
  4. Automated Feed Control: By precisely controlling the voltage supplied to the DC gear motor, the AutoGrind system can automatically feed the grinding wheel into the flywheel at a consistent and predetermined rate. This automated feed continues until the grinding head reaches a previously set depth.

Troubleshooting the Auto-Grind system often involves examining the functionality of this gear motor. Key checks include verifying that the DC Controller is supplying the correct voltage to the motor and observing whether the motor shaft is rotating and successfully engaging the drive gears via the clutch pulley. If the motor shaft spins but the drive gears remain stationary, the electric clutch is likely the source of the issue. If the DC controller is providing power and the wiring is sound, but the motor shaft fails to turn, the motor itself may be faulty, although these DC motors are reported to be “RARELY fail”. In this case the failure is more likely to be the DC Controller located in the control panel.

In essence, the Autogrind DC Gearmotor is a vital actuator within the Auto-Grind system, providing the reliable and controlled mechanical force necessary for automated flywheel grinding operations on compatible Van Norman machines.
